EDU 921 - Writing in the Mathematics ClassroomCredits: 3 Learn how to teach K-12 students to reflect, share ideas and understand the meaning of math through writing. Teach students to explain and justify their thinking to others. Writing helps them organize their thoughts and procedures clearly. Writing in the mathematics classroom also provides opportunities for students to rethink explanations as peers listen and respond. This online course will explore the various uses of writing in the math classroom to enhance student understanding, increase independence and promote self-evaluation. Specific resources and activities provided will encourage the development and use of writing experiences such as reflective writing, math journals, and problem solving explanations. The interdisciplinary approach in this course and all of the readings and activities are built upon Common Core standards. Teachers may complete this course with or without students.
NOTE: Required textbook must be purchased separately.
