BCHM 421 - Biochemistry

Credits 3
This course covers topics at the interface of chemistry and biology with a focus on the major classes of biomolecules, enzymes, and cellular respiration. The assembly, structure, and function of proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates are studied. This course emphasizes protein structure, catalysis, and quantitative analysis of kinetics. Lastly, the chemical reactions important to biology - and the enzymes that catalyze these reactions - are discussed in an integrated format. Metabolic pathways include: glycolysis, TCA cycle, electronic transport, and oxidative phosphorylation. Lecture, 45 hours.
