SW 751 - Faith and Social Work Practice in Organizations and Communities

This course is designed to aid students interested in working within faith and non-faith-based groups, organizations, and communities. Studies explore leadership principles by critically examining concepts of peace and justice for leading and serving both within and across racial/ethnic, gender, class, national and religious lines in the era of globalization. Skills and models for leading multicultural communities, working with diverse constituencies to advance practice effectiveness is explored. Studies include, but not limited to, churches/congregations, other faith-based and non-faith-based organizations are presented and inform the development of a personal and professional ethic of leadership. Particular attention is paid to the personal and spiritual disciplines that represent best practices cultivated in the context of often complex and overwhelming circumstances, that lead to a leader's longevity in helping people. Ethical faith integration is explored in the context of brokering, negotiating, mediating, and working within collaborative partnerships.
