Teacher Librarian Program

Overview

The Teacher Librarian Program offers coursework leading to a California Teacher Librarian Services Credential and Special Class Authorization (SCA) in Information and Digital Literacy, a Master of Arts in Education degree with a school library and information technology emphasis, and National Board Certification in Library Media. The effective teacher librarian (also known as school librarian, library media teacher, and library media specialist) works collaboratively with classroom teachers to develop and implement standards-based learning experiences for diverse student populations; selects, organizes, manages, and promotes the use of learning resources in all formats; and instructs students and staff in the critical evaluation, appropriate access, and effective use of information. The mission of the Teacher Librarian Program is to prepare professional educators to develop and maintain high quality library media and curricular programs by serving as information and technology specialists, collaborative leaders, and instructional partners in K-12 schools.

Candidates have several coursework options within the Teacher Librarian Program:

Individual LIB courses can also be taken on a non-matriculated basis.

National Board Certification in Library Media Coursework

The purpose of this online coursework is to assist candidates in preparing the National Board Certification Early Childhood through Young Adulthood/Library Media (ECYA/Library Media) portfolio entries. Librarians currently working in a K-12 school library that have successfully registered for Components 2, 3, and/or 4 of the National Board Certification process for Library Media may enroll in these courses on a non-matriculated basis. For M.A. candidates not seeking the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential, successful completion of LIB 794 , LIB 795 , and LIB 796 may be substituted for LIB 792: Field Studies in School Librarianship. Candidates may only register for LIB 794, 795, and/or 796 in the fall semester. Each course extends through spring semester and may be repeated. Passage of LIB 794, 795, and 796 does not guarantee passage of the National Board Certification Components.
