Teaching Single Subject Credential, M.A.

Overview

The Single Subject Credential program prepares candidates for a preliminary teaching credential and provides foundational courses for a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). Only Fresno Pacific credential program completers are eligible to continue in the capstone courses of the MAT to complete their degree. MAT students must be employed as credentialed teachers and return to the capstone courses within five years of credential program completion.  

Admissions Process and Requirements

Admission to the Fresno Pacific University Single Subject Credential and Master of Arts in Teaching programs is based on a review of each applicant's admission requirements.

• Completed application for admission
• Statement of Intent – Provide a written statement explaining your interest in the program, long-term goals and your experience in the field.
• Two current reference forms
• Interview with program director
• All official transcripts from colleges/universities attended other than Fresno Pacific
• Verification of current negative TB test (last 12 months)
• CTC Certificate of Clearance

The program expects applicants from FPU as well as other universities to complete their application and submit all application documents to the program at least six weeks before they expect to begin coursework.

Basic Skills and Subject Matter Competency Requirements

• Verification of Basic Skills by degree
• Verification of Subject Matter Competency by degree, course work, or passing CSET

Admission Requirements for M.A. in Teaching Post-Credential

To be considered for admission to the M.A. in Teaching program post-credential, please submit the following items:

• Completed Application for Admission.
• Signed verification of Employment Form.
• Applicants must complete the multiple subject or single subject credential program at Fresno Pacific University no more than five years prior to enrolling. This program is only for students who have obtained their credential at FPU.

Notification of acceptance will be sent as soon as all necessary documents are on file and have been reviewed by the admissions committee. Application is due no later than May 1.

Accreditation

FPU's credentials are accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). The CTC website provides extensive guidelines pertaining to becoming a teacher in California (ctc.ca.gov).

MAT Post-Credential Program Student Learning Outcomes

Students within the Teacher Education Program at Fresno Pacific University who complete a preliminary teaching credential and master's degree in teaching understand teaching to be a calling to redemptive service via the following:

1. Candidates inquire into teaching practice and student learning to reflect on problems of practice and implement conclusions to improve teaching and learning.
2. Candidates critically reflect on how their biases, assumptions, and ideologies influence their professional practice and act to mitigate these influences in interactions with students, families, and communities.
3. Candidates use knowledge of education, economic, and social contexts to engage in collaboration and advocacy for all students.
4. Candidates promote student learning by creating positive and inclusive classroom environments and interact effectively with families and others in the school community.

Program Pacing Options

The Single Subject credential program offers students opportunities to start the preliminary credential phase of the MAT program in the summer, fall or spring terms.

Field experience pathways include student teaching and independent teaching/intern options. Length of program is dependent upon field experience pathway, ranging from 3 to 6 semesters.

MAT Post-Credential Pacing

Coursework for the post-credential phase of the MAT requires completion of a four-course sequence in fall – spring.
