Latin American and Caribbean Studies Minor

Projected Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of all courses required for the LACS program, students will be able to:

  1. Analyze topics in culture, politics, economics, society, and education in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.
  2. Engage in critical thinking about the main problems, challenges and debates that Latin America will face in the 21st century.
  3. Examine current issues in Latin America in the context of historical developments.
  4. Use interdisciplinary and systemic tools to study Latin American complexity, including the advanced study of fields such as economics, political science, sociology, history, natural science or engineering.
  5. Describe the unique characteristics of Latin America as well as its diversity.
  6. Study the Latin American context in relation to the US.

d. What careers or further study students may pursue upon successful completion of the program: The Latin American and Caribbean Studies minor seeks to enhance students from all racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds with an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural educational experience that will boost their possibility for employment in a variety of traditional and non-traditional career paths such as governmental and non-governmental organizations, public policy, law, business and higher education. Since the Spanish language and culture is a key element of the minor, students can seek careers in different corporations where minimum understanding of the language and culture of the Latin American world has become an essential requirement: Management and Administration, Governmental Translation and Interpretation, Health, Environment fields, and Nursing are among an immense category where the Spanish language and culture must be used.
