    Enhance your knowledge base related to coaching cross country at the middle school level and above. Course objectives are modeled after standards-based learning objectives for teachers and for coaches as outlined by the Society of Health and Physical Education (SHAPE America), and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). The course is project based including creating a training program and home management system.

    Credits: 3
    Discover fundamental and advanced principles in a format that is appropriate for all levels of swimmers, from the beginner to the most seasoned veteran. Be exposed to a wide variety of coaching methods and learn training principles, racing strategies and aquatic safety.   • ATH 928 - Core Body Training

    Credits: 2
    The core of the body is the center for strength and movement and acts as the foundation for the body. A strong core body will enhance overall health and performance related to movement and athletics. It will also help in injury prevention and protection of the spine. The course will provide participants the opportunity to learn strategies and training methodology related to core body strength and to develop and implement core body training programs. NOTE: Required textbook, Delavier's Core Training Anatomy, must be purchased separately.
  
  • ATH 929 - Concussion in Sports

    Credits: 3
    Be introduced to sport concussions: brain anatomy; causes of concussions; what happens to the brain when someone sustains a concussion; sign and symptoms; short and long-term effects associated with concussions; review of different concussion assessment/evaluation tools; examination of return-to-play protocols; how to prevent concussions; treatment and rehabilitation of individuals who have sustained concussions; concussions in professional sport; and current trends and research on concussions. Successful completion of this course leads to certification of completion by the National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS) in Concussion in Sports.

    Discover the purposes and methods of using various taping techniques to support and protect injuries to bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, and joints of the body.     Credits: 3
    The concept of interval training has exploded in recent years with the popularity of CrossFit, P90X, and other high-intensity training programs. However, interval training can also complement the student-athlete preparing for regular season games and peaking at the end of the season. Minimize the effects of fatigue while building and maintaining muscle mass, allowing student-athletes to increase strength, power, and agility. Learn about the concepts and tools needed to develop safe and effective interval training programs that support national standards.

    Obtain an overview of the Bible from Genesis through Revelation. Examine the composition of the biblical documents, and discover an overall analysis of the themes and storyline of the Bible.   • ELA 911 - Applied Logic of Language

    Credits: 3
    Classroom teachers who have completed Logic of Language (LEN 903/2003) may now use it in their classroom with their students for professional development credit. The participating teacher will administer the tests, guide the students through the prescribed books, assist the students in developing their writing exercises, and provide appropriate experiences in literature. Cost of materials and fees will vary, based on the number of units to be earned (3-6) and the number of students involved and books covered in the program. Permission of the teacher's supervisor is necessary to take this course. Participation with students is required. BEFORE ENROLLING, PLEASE CALL THE INSTRUCTOR TO DETERMINE THE NUMBER OF UNITS AND APPROPRIATE MATERIALS FEES TO BE PAID.

    In any classroom, reading and writing can become wonderful tools for young people to use as they grow in their understanding of themselves and the world. This course is designed to give teachers of grades 5-12 practical techniques to help young people become willing and effective readers and writers. Some classrooms may be facing substance abuse, relationship conflicts, teenage mothers and fathers, depression or other issues that make learning difficult. Other classrooms may be full of energetic, enthusiastic learners who seem to produce beyond the teacher's expectations. Discover creative ways of making literature come alive for students so they recognize the value of reading and writing.

    Enrolling in this course will deepen awareness of power and value of student writing; gain confidence and skill in the teaching of writing; expand strategies for tailoring instruction to students' needs; and build a practical collection of writing activities (Grades 3-12). Teaching Writing offers practical strategies for teaching the writing process, incorporating grammatical elements, and exploring various forms and styles of writing. Teachers recognize that equipping students with the necessary tools for writing well shapes students into strong and effective communicators.
  
  • ELA 914 - Reel Reading: Film and Literacy

    Credits: 3
    Engage your students with visual and printed texts by bringing the big screen into your classroom. This online, standards-based course invites teachers to discover how 'reading' films strengthens the analytical and critical thinking skills of their students. Visual texts, such as film, offer an innovative way to help students 'see' literary structures and reading strategies in action. As students recognize the connections between film and printed text, they will become more confident in their ability to appreciate, understand and analyze literary texts. This course may be completed with or without students.
