    This cognitive approach to managing human behavior can be taught to students and parents for life-long social and emotional learning, self-esteem development, and healthy life-style choices.   • EDUC 921 - Positive Behavioral Support

    3 Units
    This course for teachers, grades K-12, encourages the integration of Positive Behavioral Intervention and support (PBIS) principles into classroom management. It contains entertaining videos and classroom activities to identify behavioral issues addressed by PBIS. Teachers will explore PBIS for their grade level and select classroom interventions that teach and reinforce behavioral standards for their age group. This course addresses the five core propositions of National Teaching Standards.

    This class will introduce some skill sets that can be acquired and used in becoming an effective communicator with students, parents, and colleagues, increasing a teacher's ability to make significant connections with everyone. Many of the tools discussed in this class are not usually taught in a typical teacher training program, but once recognized and practiced can make a huge difference for anyone's effectiveness in their professional career and private life. Data gathered from professional researchers at Stanford University to the question "What are the characteristics of an effective teacher?" places communication and clarity at the top of the list. Effective teachers have learned from others or taught themselves the necessary "skill sets" in order to be successful communicators with their students.

    Instructional Strategies Research Based students will gain understanding of factors that lead to maximum gains in education. In this new online course, participants will learn how to enhance student achievement at all grade levels and subjects through review of Robert Marzano's 1998 and 2010 Instructional Strategy research. The 2010 research developed a framework for instructional planning to provide an environment for learning. The experiences in this course will assist educators in maximizing the research-based instructional strategies application for the K-12 classroom.     A teacher's portfolio is more than just a digital scrapbook or a collection of one's best teaching efforts. It is a demonstration of professional growth and improvement as a leader. However, if it does not document student learning, then it is just a showcase of one's professional growth. Professional Portfolios will help educators, administrators and students alike because the main goal of the course is to effectively demonstrate teacher competency and student learning. The portfolio can serve as a vehicle to prepare you for a crucial job interview, a preparation course for a tenured teacher who wishes to be a NBPTS certified master teacher or as a vehicle to continue one's professional growth and development. Note: The required textbook must be purchased separately. This is an online course, but it is available in a traditional format as well upon request.

It addresses many national standards for all grade levels, and the only technology requirement is a computer and phone. Students will learn how to support a candidate, issue, or even run for political office. On a classroom level, teachers will create a fun and engaging lesson plans developing citizenship.
